so now that the blog is back in action, i should probably show what is going on right now at the shop
for one, boxes and more boxes, so much stuff is coming in every day

not everything is still boxed up though, we have almost all our 2011 skis out and on display(which means for sale)

so the blog hasnt been updated in ages, but that is all about to change
fall is almost here and that means winter is just around the corner

so on that note, there is definitely some things to look forward to this season

first we have a railjam in the works that could hopefully go on sometime in early/mid november

second, 2011 gear is looking more official than a referee with a whistle, so grind on those day jobs and clock chedda because you will want to spend dollars on this stuff

lastly, for those of you livin under a rock, the Dew Tour is coming to Killington, which means X-Games caliber athletes and nightlife, so that will obviously mean big things

but yeah, these are just a few of the things right now on the schedule that will be 2011

So with rails to riches only a few days away, it is finally starting to look like winter. It's been snowing on and off, and plow trucks can finally be spotted from the access road. Looks like a storm coming in wednesday night might bring in some decent accumulation too! This is Goose, he's a pitbull/ dutch shepherd/ mountain cur. I've had him for a little over 4 months now and he's an awesome dog. Great temperment, super friendly, loves to play. I'll be taking him for hikes around the mountains this summer and hopefully will have him to accompany me on backcountry treks next winter.

somehow over the course of the last month i didn't manage to add any new posts to this blog, so i doubt anybody is reading this. i just got back from the 29th annual bear mountain mogul challenge. seeing as how its april 4th, it only makes sense that it was puking out all morning and the winds were gusting up to 50+mph.

my run was pretty lousy but i had a ton of fun. last time i did this comp, i was skiing bumps on a pretty regular basis. this year, the only quick turns i was making were in the woods.

killington just announced that they'll be open until may 2nd (or later..). i think im pretty done with bumps for the year, so if youre at the mountain, you can catch me jerkin' around in the late-season park all geeked up.

Wild wild weather

We've had the gamut of weather over the past week. Let me tell you about it:

Monday - Puking, we logged a solid 12-16 inches of fresh
Tuesday - More puking + wind left waist deep drifts in the woods off the canyon
Wednesday - Sun, temps in the low 30's. Lapped park all day. Awesome.
Thursday - Partly sunny, temps in the mid-40s. I had to work.
Friday - Cloudy, temps nearing 50... then.. rain. Lame.
Saturday - A deep freeze overnight combined with wild grooming action created a sea of golfballs on the slopes. A lot of people only went out for 2 or 3 runs in this crap.
Sunday - Cold, more grooming, the skiing was somewhat feasible.
Today (Monday) - Puking, hoping to log another 12-16 inches by the time the storm passes through tomorrow.

It's supposed to stay cold all week, so this weekend should be a good one. More snow is on the way. Winter's back. Get out and shred the octagonal gnar-scar.

kung fujas review

Here is a wicked cool ski for ya. At first glance, the graphics are baller as f#$k. I'm totally digging the transparent top sheet, which is going to be popping up more and more next year from brands like Atomic and Salomon. Seriously, what better way to floss what's under the hood than throwing on a transparent top sheet that shows off a full on wood core with carbon fiber stringers that add stiffness and pop? Also, Ryan Schmies has been cranking out awesome graphics for decades, so art on these bad boys is totally worthy.

OK gear nuts, here's the tech specs:

Dimensions: 125/95/120
Rocker: 5/30 tip, 5/30 tail
Radius/Taper: 21m, BiDirectional taper can carve a burly switch turn)
Construction: ABS sidewall
Core: Fir
Sizes: 169,179,189

For a ski that's 95mm in the waist, it was surprisingly nimble and playful when it came to laying down carves. I popped in a little soft snow and you could definitely feel the rockered tip adding float. I even took a quick zipper line through the bumps, which wasn't as disastrous as I thought. For everyday trail riding, these skis could hold their own.

Where the Kung Fujas really shined, however, was in the park. The rockered tip and tail made nosebutters effortless and added significant pop to my ollie. It was stable while taking off and landing switch, and had a low swing weight. Speaking of swing weight, K2/Marker will be releasing a binding system next year called the Schizofrantic, which is essentially a Griffin/Jester suped up demo binding. It will allow you to interchange between having your bindings mounted at true center and mounted farther back for powder/all mountain ripping.

All in all, if you live out west, here's your one ski quiver. If you live on the east coast, you might want to use this ski on days when you aren't using hockey skates.

Pro's:
+Stable, fun, floaty
+Flexible and buttery
+Super park friendly

Con's:
-Too soft for boilerplate ice
-Skis a little short (due to rocker)

The first time I saw this ski was a little over a year ago when a roommate (who we'll call Panda Barry) had a pair of prototypes with the Invader top sheet, and a layered thin-wood core that resembled the construction of a skateboard. The skis looked pretty rad, but at the time I think Panda was more stoked on riding the Anthems, so I never really gave them much consideration.

Fast forward to Tuesday at Stratton, when I along with every other shop manager from the East Coast had the opportunity to try out the new skis that will be out next year. I took the Afterbangs out for a couple runs, and I gotta say these things are sick. I've never ridden a ski that is easier to butter and ollie. The butter zones that were made famous in skis like the Invader and Anthem were pushed in a few more inches making the ski super easy to flex and press.

Yesterday, Lux Interior of the NYC Punk Legends, the Cramps, had passed away due to a heart condition. I'm sure Lux would love the Line Afterbangs as much as I did. Here he is playing for a crowd of mental patients.

Anywayz, I didn't get the dimensions from Curry, but I'd say the Afterbangs were about 85mm underfoot making them stable, yet still super light and easy to swing around. The ski is totally symmetric and should be mounted true center, making it really fun and predictable while riding switch. Still, I layed out some high speed GS carves, and they held a good edge through the duration of the turn.

If you are interested in putting a little more fun back in your riding, this is the ski for you.

All in all, here are my thoughts:

Pro's:
Most buttery, poppy ski ever. Nothing compares.
Very low swing weight
Stable platform for control while riding switch
Throwback Thrasher-style graphics. If you're older than 18, you'll recognize.

Con's:
Probably wouldn't want this ski if I was hitting 90 footers.

Dream Maker - 1/21/09

After jonsin' to hit some jumps for a few days I made it out to the hill yesterday for a few laps on Dream Maker. Just a quick recap, here's what's goin' on in the park-

-Same rail options at the top...
-25 foot step down
-35 foot table
-hip
-step up with 20-25 foot options
-25 foot table with mellow pop
-35 foot table with too much pop
-30 foot table, perfect
-something resembling a quarterpipe at the end

Also, the super pipe is open. The shape is similar to what they had goin' on last year. The walls are shaped nicely, but there's not quite enough flat in the middle to make riding comfortable. Look before you leap, sucka!

What's poppin off at Evolution

What's up boys and squirrels.. In case you haven't been up on the mountain in a couple weeks, you should know that they opened up the park on Dream Maker. It's pretty nice so far, with a rail line at the top (including the Rails to Riches down-flat-down), and 6 or so jumps on the bottom. All the jumps are around 25-35 feet, with pretty consistent takeoffs and landings. Hopefully it won't be the gnarly taco it was last year, and have a few extra feet of flat in the middle.

Other than that, in a few minutes Barack Obama is going to replace that other guy (what was his name.. George something?) as president. I'll try not to let my political views intersect with this blog, but as a skier, I gotta say I have a lot of confidence in Obama's environmental policy, which should hopefully stymie global warming and keep our winters snowy.

Cold Friday

When I drove in to the Basin this morning the temperatures were hovering around -20 F. On Vermont Public Radio this morning they announced that this was the coldest morning in the past 15 years, with temps in some parts of Vermont falling below -30F. Just to serve as a time reference, the last time it was this cold out, this little gem was rocking the airwaves of Hot 97 NYC Hip Hop Radio:

Right now (2:00 PM) it's a balmy 7F but with the wind it feels like -8. Michael just walked in from a quick session up on the mountain, and I got cold just looking at him. Tomorrow might be a good morning to take off and stop on in to Evolution and grab a down jacket from Orage or Salomon.

This week is MLK week/College Week part deux, so we'll be offering some good sales on outerwear. Rumor has it that we're getting another snow storm on Sunday, so keep your fingers crossed!
